What to Do After a Wreck in Granbury
Short answer: Get to safety, call 911 if anyone's hurt or a car can't be driven, and photograph everything. Then get examined within a few days, even without pain, open a PIP claim, and hold off on anything the other insurer wants you to say or sign.
At the roadside
Many wrecks around Granbury happen at highway speed or after dark: 21.8% of area crashes from 2021 to 2025 were on unlit roads. Safety comes first.
- Call 911 for injuries or a car that can't be driven safely; Texas law requires notifying police in those cases (§550.026).
- Get visible: hazards on; move off US 377 or the farm road if the car runs.
- Document: both cars, plates, the road, signs or signals, skid marks, your injuries. Photograph the other driver's insurance card and license.
- Witnesses: names and numbers before they drive off.
- Words: stick to facts; no apologies, no fault talk.
Granbury Police handle crashes inside city limits; on county roads and highways outside the city, the report may come from Texas DPS or the Hood County Sheriff’s Office.
That night or the next day
Lake Granbury Medical Center on Paluxy Road is Granbury’s hospital emergency room. For the most serious injuries, call 911 and let paramedics choose the hospital. JPS in Fort Worth is the region’s Level I trauma center. If you didn't go to the ER, see a provider who examines crash injuries within a few days (options). Start a dated list of symptoms; stiffness and headaches often show up late.
The first week
Report the wreck to your own insurer and ask to open a PIP claim. Expect a call from the other driver's adjuster; you can keep it short (what to say).
Week two
Order the crash report once it's filed and check it for mistakes. Get the vehicle handled on its own track (why). Have a lawyer look at any release or settlement offer before you sign.
Roadside questions
It’s dark and the road has no shoulder. What do I do?
If you can move the car, get it off the road and turn on your hazards. If you can’t, stay belted in with hazards on and call 911, unless the car is in danger of being hit or catching fire.
Who comes to the scene?
Inside Granbury, Granbury Police. Outside the city it may be Texas DPS or the Hood County Sheriff. 911 will send whoever covers that road.
Do I need the ER if I can walk?
Not always, but after a highway-speed crash, a belt bruise, belly pain, a bad headache or confusion means yes.
