Uninsured and Hit-and-Run Wrecks Near Granbury
Short answer: If the other driver had no insurance, too little, or left the scene, look to your own policy. Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage pays what they can't, and PIP covers early bills, unless either was rejected in writing.
Three situations
- No insurance
- Your UM coverage stands in for the at-fault driver's missing liability coverage.
- Minimum limits
- Texas minimums are $30,000 per person (§601.072). If your losses are higher, UIM can pay the difference up to your limits.
- Hit-and-run
- Call 911 and get a report. Note anything about the other vehicle and its direction, and find witnesses. Then report it to your insurer and ask about PIP and UM.
Insurers must offer UM/UIM and it can only be rejected in writing (Ins. Code §1952.101). Granbury Police handle crashes inside city limits; on county roads and highways outside the city, the report may come from Texas DPS or the Hood County Sheriff’s Office.
A lawyer can check which coverages apply. See PIP and who pays.
